Description: Dany Island Spectacular Coral Reefs is a government-registered Community Conservation Area (CCA) in Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, protecting approximately one million square metres of marine habitat. Registered through Vanuatu's Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation (DEPC), the area supports community-based protection of nesting hawksbill and green sea turtles. Our Ni-Vanuatu conservation team works with Vanuatu Fisheries and SPREP on turtle conservation, nesting beach protection, monitoring and research. We have received SPREP training in turtle genetic sampling and have sampling equipment on the island, with further staff training planned. Dany Island is the turtle nesting location for the entire region - averaging 1600 turtes hatched per season. Our work focuses on protecting threatened sea turtle populations, addressing local threats and filling conservation-relevant data gaps through monitoring and the TREDS database. Conservation is the primary purpose of the protected area, supported by Dany Island's facilities and personnel.
