Description: My sea turtle conservation work in the Niger Delta focuses on assessing bycatch in artisanal and commercial fisheries and protecting critical nesting habitats along Akasa, Bonny, Andoni, Eket, and Bakassi. The project documents species most at risk, seasonal and spatial bycatch patterns, and evaluates bycatch reduction technologies with active fisher participation. On nesting beaches, threats such as erosion, sand mining, and industrial activities are monitored to inform conservation strategies. By combining ecological research with community engagement, the initiative strengthens local stewardship, supports evidence-based policy, and contributes to the long-term survival of endangered sea turtles in the Gulf of Guinea.
Species of focus: Olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea), Loggerheads (Caretta caretta), Green turtles (Chelonia mydas), Leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea), Hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata)
