Description: 7Quillas is the San Juan Sea Turtle Conservancy group. A community based nonprofit organization certified under Section 1101.01 (a) local tax-exemption, and under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code. Authorized by the Puerto Rico Government Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) for the protection of endangered sea turtles and its habitat since 2014. 7Quillas has been deputized by the DNER to manage sea turtles nesting and habitat restoration in all the beaches of San Juan, capital city of Puerto Rico. 7 Quillas is also in partnership with the Leatherback Habitat Restoration Project funded by National Wildlife Refuge Association and collaborates with the Caribbean Center of Manatee Conservation and EcoExploratorio Science Museum. Despite threats such as light pollution disorientation, sand compression, human activity, contaminants, climate change effects, such as beach erosion and the weakening of our reefs, leatherback sea turtle nests continue to be protected, and baby hatchlings are safely released every year in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Unprotected, one out of 1,000 released survives. Since 2015, the San Juan Sea Turtle Conservancy group 7Quillas has protected over 210 leatherback nests and saved over 3,100 thousand baby turtles. Amidst all the challenges of a public nesting beach in the capital city, through our sea turtle conservancy and educational projects, and community outreach programs 7Quillas continues to protect sea turtles and the San Juan nesting beaches. We have witnessed the deterioration in our area and know we all have to collaborate in stopping, minimizing, and mitigating the impacts which heighten the disastrous effects of climate change through education, awareness and outreach programs. This is why alliances will help strengthen 7Quillas educational, community outreach programs to continue protecting endangered species, restore, and conserve their habitat, and subsequently all 1,225 beaches and 44 coastal communities in the Archipielago of Puerto Rico.
