Description: Founded in 2000, Turtle Foundation now consists of seven national organisations, all of which are non-profit and tax-exempt under the laws of their respective countries: TF Germany, TF Switzerland, TF USA, TF Cabo Verde (local name: Fundação Tartaruga), TF Liechtenstein, TF Indonesia (local name: Yayasan Penyu Indonesia) and TF UK. Additionally, in Germany the support association "Turtle Foundation Friends" is registered as a non-profit organisation. In its conservation projects in Indonesia and Cabo Verde, Turtle Foundation is fighting against the imminent extinction of sea turtles on the premise that sustainability can only be achieved in close and trusting cooperation with the local population. On the Cape Verdean island of Boa Vista, Fundação Tartaruga protects some 30 km of important nesting beach from poaching of nesting female loggerhead turtles. In addition, a special team equipped with night vision drones, thermal binoculars, and conservation dogs supports the anti-poaching efforts of the local authorities. The project relies heavily on cooperation with local communities and runs a recognised international volunteer program.
