Description: Rushikulya, in southern Odisha, is one of two mass nesting rookeries for olive ridley turtles in Odisha. Dakshin Foundation initiated a long-term programme at Rushikulya in 2008, and has since have been monitoring the olive ridley population through offshore boat surveys to understand at-sea abundance, daily night patrols for solitary nesting, arribada census, and estimation of hatchling sex ratios and hatching success. Through the project, we have also been working towards community-based conservation models involving the local community and the state forest department.
